Saint John Lennon Author, Daniel Hartwell, with John Lennon’s Attorney Leon Wildes
In our world, President’s Day reminds us of “Tricky Dick” – John Lennon’s arch nemesis. Lennon’s anti-war campaign was the bane of the President’s existence. Nixon feared Lennon because he believed the legendary Beatle could impede his chances of re-election. In 1971 the 26thamendment to the constitution was amended giving 18-year-olds the right to vote. Lennon’s persuasive anti-war message during the Vietnam war threatened Nixon. Lennon’s message of “love and peace” during an era of anti-war protests, and the assassinations of Bobby Kennedy and Martin Luther King, Jr. was a challenge to Nixon’s power. The President’s response? His administration initiated proceedings to deport John Lennon. The Immigration and Naturalization Service sent John a letter demanding he leave the U.S. Their reason? John had been convicted of a misdemeanor in 1968 for possession of marijuana.
Lennon’s brilliant attorney Leon Wildes appealed and turned up documentation that proved Nixon’s motives were political and not based on Lennon posing any real threat to the U.S. Behind the scenes, the Watergate scandal was unfolding, ultimately resulting in Nixon’s resignation in 1974 and the end of his personally motivated harassment of Lennon. On October 9th, 1975 – John Lennon’s 35thbirthday – Leon Wildes delivered the good news that the deportation suit had been officially dropped. Earlier in the day, Yoko had delivered a baby boy, Sean Lennon!
Do you wonder how John would interact with our President today if he were here? Saint John Lennon just won a B.R.A.G. medallion award and one of the Indie B.R.A.G. reviewers said, “The part where John went to have dinner with President Trump cracked me up as it seemed so accurately written, like a description of something that has happened, not just made up.” Here’s a little behind the scenes secret of why the scene felt so authentic. We went to President Trump’s twitter archive and used real things he’s said on the record as part of the dialogue! If you want to see what happens, pick up your copy today.
