Lennon’s message of “love and peace” during an era of anti-war protests, and the assassinations of Bobby Kennedy and Martin Luther King, Jr. was a challenge to Nixon’s power. The President’s response? His administration initiated proceedings to deport John Lennon. The Immigration and Naturalization Service sent John a letter demanding he leave the U.S. Their reason? John had been convicted of a misdemeanor in 1968 for possession of marijuana.
Lennon’s brilliant attorney Leon Wildes appealed and turned up documentation that proved Nixon’s motives were political and not based on Lennon posing any real threat to the U.S. Behind the scenes, the Watergate scandal was unfolding, ultimately resulting in Nixon’s resignation in 1974 and the end of his personally motivated harassment of Lennon. On October 9th, 1975 – John Lennon’s 35thbirthday – Leon Wildes delivered the good news that the deportation suit had been officially dropped. Earlier in the day, Yoko had delivered a baby boy, Sean Lennon!
